Why study?

My main reason for studying at the Karlstad University is because I want an education that gives me more opportunities to get a job that I like and also can make a decent living from. I guess most people studying share that reason with me. Even if it seems harder now and university studies is not longer the "free ticket" getting a job I still believe it is at least some kind of ticket. Where it leads is for us to see. There are not many other ways to choose from.

The drive to learn new things and gain knowledge in different areas is of course another important reason for continuing studying all your life. I think the many years since leaving high school in a way makes me see things in a different way. Just like a fine wine maturing with age life gets better. At the same time you develop your own taste. I can say I appreciate studying more now than I did right after highschool.

Getting a family makes me feel even more that I want to do the best I can to someday be able to provide for and support it in the best way possible. To have a proper education and one that opens up for more possibilities is essential for achieving this goal.

But at the same time it is not easy to be a student for years with next to no money having to buy expensive course books that you often just will be using for a couple of weeks. After that they are mostly just taking up space in your cupboard. Expensive space I say! But I hope the contents of the books will leave something useful in my head and fill up the holes there too!

Why I choose to study in Karlstad is because I live here and I want to be near my family. (Yes of course they want me to be here too!)

You’re right; there is not that many "tickets" to choose from. It seems that studying at a university is the best way to get a decent job! If you don't have good connections, that is.

The books are expensive and take up alot of space, but I can't help but feel a little bit smarter having those books around ;)

I know what you mean regarding better chances with getting a job after graduation but I still feel that its much more to it.
For me as an engineer student I know that when/if I get a job within my field I will use around 10 percent of my university studies and its inevitable to keep studying and keep learning throughout the working period.
For me expanding and nursing my connections together with searching and learning new, of the program schedule, stuff has been more important than completing the degree itself.

I think the thirst for knowlage is very good to show in a work situation. That means that you necessarily don't need to be an expert, cus you will be one day.

Yes, I agree! I also think that an education will help you on the way towards a job that you like. It will not give you any guarantees of course, but my opinion is that you don’t waste your time studying at the university. You must be doing a great job, both studying and taking care of a family. It’s really a nice reason why to start studying.

Best regards //Helen

It seems like you got good motivation for studying, which is very important when you go to school. You have a family and have been working for some years, things that I have never experienced (and might be the reason for my low motivation from time to time). However I think that we both will have much easier finding a job when we have taken the last course.
